International Women’s Day in UCC University College Cork was celebrated with a series of presentations and discussion on the subject of ‘why the world needs more women in leadership’. After the event, the co-chairs of Mnà UCC, Emma Connolly and Clíodhna O’Callaghan together with Dr. Lee Ann Burke the Mnà Treasurer, recalled highlights of the IWD event in UCC. They are terrific women and recalled the messages they took from the morning and are well worth a listen.

Catriona Gleeson CEO of Women For Election says men or women don’t have to be up in Dublin for the sake of it. “There’s actually an opportunity to represent your community nationally, but remaining within your region reasonably, the practical things that can be done in terms of length of meeting times, notice around meetings, and the efficiency of meetings, the chairing of meetings, particularly within local government, it doesn’t have to be the way it always has been if it’s not efficient.”

There is also a fear of wealth destruction by taking risk. Investing for long term takes a bit of thinking about Seonadh Johnson believes. “The temptation is often to leave the excess liquidity in cash because they think it’s safer. But actually really understanding and compartmentalizing the different parts going okay, well, if I need this in the next year or two, yes, keep it in cash. But if you don’t need it for five years plus, then really thinking about trying to get a better return than nothing on it is something to explore.
